ABOUT PRIMARY PERITONEAL CANCER
Peritoneal Cancer is an insidious, aggressive and silent disease which originates in the peritoneum, a thin membrane which surrounds our abdomen. The cellular makeup of peritoneal cancer is almost identical to Ovarian Cancer and is treated in the same manner. It is sometimes referred to as abdominal cancer or confused with intestinal cancer or stomach cancer. Many cancers will metastasize to the peritoneum which is rich in fluid like lymph and blood.
Winnie Palmer was struck down with this cancer and died within a year. Gilda Radner died of this cancer. Pierce Brosnan's wife Cassandra died of this cancer. It a cancer like a terrorist, sneaking up when a woman least expects it, and only shows itself in vague symptoms - until diagnosis day - when it is typically discovered at an advanced stage of 3 or 4.
It is an aggressive cancer and can spread very quickly in just a matter of a few months. Since the peritoneum is so rich in lymph and blood, this type of cancer can metastasize rapidly.
Symptoms include:
- Loss of appetite
- Vague indigestion, nausea, bloated feeling
- Unexplained weight change
- Swelling in the abdomen,
- Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis
- Changes in bowel and urinary habits
